THE NOSTALGIA OF EID CELEBRATION... ‘HARI RAYA’

Most celebrations have their very own nostalgia.

Personally when I turn back the clock the most exciting part of the festival was the prospect of meeting all my close and distant family member, travelling around Malaysia to see them in their homes and sharing in all the wonderful food that was prepared in anticipation of the start of the Eid celebration.

Mother’s cooking in the kitchen, while father made lists of foods to buy. This brought smile to my face.

I was also excited by the idea of getting the chance to play with fireworks! As a child I was also very happy to receive little gifts of money – Duit Raya.

As one matures one tends to reflect more deeply on what Ramadan is supposed to be about but as a child it was what we did in the run up to Eid which was what we were really looking forward to. One of the fondest memories is of sitting as a family together in the late afternoon, just relaxing and talking and talking until the end of the day.

Finally as everybody gradually said their goodbyes and left for their homes, I will roll up my sleeves and taking the mop and vacuum, clear all the mess!

Finally, I say Selamat Hari Raya, Maaz Zahir Batin.

THE NOSTALGIA OF EID CELEBRATION... 'HARI RAYA' Malay Translation:

Kebanyakan perayaan mempunyai nostalgia mereka sendiri.

Akhir sekali, saya mengatakan Selamat Hari Raya, Maaz Zahir Batin.
