USING PATTERN IN YOUR HOME

Would you like to have a well decorated home with a WOW factor but always seem to play it SAFE?

In this month’s Design Desire, I provide 4 easy steps to achieving cohesive home decor using patterns. A single colour or pattern can be monotonous however, mixing & matching can be difficult. By applying the proper techniques, you will be able to mix & match colours and patterns in order to develop a unique and tasteful style. There are many ways we can incorporate patterns into our homes - wall treatments, soft furnishings and accessories.

Use patterns that are appropriate to the style of your home and suitable for all moods and occasions. For example a country cottage is not the best place for bold geometric shapes in vivid colours!

Step 1:
When mixing & matching colours and patterns it is best not to choose more than 4 colours. Walls are an obvious focal point, so use bold, floral or graphic wallpapers behind a sofa or bed. Or to stand out from the crowd consider a textured wall. Italian polished plaster for example provides a stunning finish that emulates polished marble, travertine, limestone or even metallic. It is available in an extensive range of colour palettes, providing a perfectly bespoke look.

Step 2:
Select a large colourful pattern on one large object e.g. a rug or occasional chair. Choose a fabric with at least 3 colours that are not neutrals and don’t forget to play with texture. Elaborately designed curtains and blinds can also be used to make a statement. Do be aware that using more than one large scale pattern in your room can be overwhelming.

Step 3:
Now choose a medium scale pattern on a mid-sized object e.g. a throw or oversized pillow. The pattern should incorporate 1 or 2 colours from the large scale pattern; although it does not have to include all of them.

Step 4:
Use smaller scale patterns for accessories e.g. cushions, vases. These smaller objects should include at least 1 colour from the large scale pattern.

Finally there is no wrong way to mix patterns & colours. Choose those that are pleasing to your eye, for a home that feels right for you.
